The Mystery of the Stradivarius Family

Stradivarius label with "made in Germany"

Antonio Stradivarius was probably the most prolific violinmaker in history. (He sometimes also spelled his first name Antonius, many people back then were iliterate and couldn't spell) He made many thousands of violins, many of which I have worked on and examined closely. Most of the violins he made were dedicated to his wife Faciebat Anna.  It is  very common to see instruments where he added "Made in Germany" to the label, showing that he was such a workoholic that he even made violins while on vacation!

Supposably Antonio's two sons Omo Bono and Francisco were also violinmaker's but if they were they don't seem to have made very many since I've never seen one of there instruments. However, I believe there were other sons of Stradivarius that did make a lot of violins.

I have worked on several violins from a German maker named Nachahmung von Stradivarius. Notice that name. Except for the "von" its the same as "Stradivarius"! It is my belief that on one (or more!) of his many trips to Germany Antonio was unfaithful to Faciebat Anna and had a son named Nachahmung, who used his father's last name but added "von" to make it sound more German.

I have also seen violins by another maker named Kopie von Stradivarius. I believe he was Nachahmung's brother. It looks like Kopie at some time may have moved to France, where he began using the French form of his name, "Copie de Stradivarius". These two makers each made hundreds of instruments and carried on the tradition of there father but until now nobody made the connection because the "main stream" violin "experts"  assumed that since Antonio Stradivarius was Italian his family had to be in Italy. Sometimes you've got to think outside the box!
